Burning Man 2005

The Quixotic Windmill Burn was a project headed up by Eric Miller of Plymouth, Michigan. Three 20 foot Dutch windmills were built, spun with the wind and all, as an embodiment of our fears and nightmares. You were encouraged to pop in, and jot your worries and fears onto blocks of wood before the burn, and when the place was set on fire, your nightmares were burned, setting you free. (Or at least, that's how I understood it to represent.)

On Thursday night (September 1), the three windmills were set on fire in a performance by knights with flaming lances. (The windmills web site is found at http://www.burningwindmills.com/.) The bummer was that from my distance, I couldn't see much of the knights' performance, but the burn was impressive.

We bumped into the windmills as we wandered around the playa on Wednesday and ventured inside. After the knights finished their jousting, the first of the three mills were set ablaze. And the burning continues...

... and continues. The steel frame begins to show... ... until they burn themselves out.
