In 1565, the first permanent township was formed in the United States,
years before the pilgrims arrived in Plymouth Rock or the English founded
Jamestown, Virginia. This place, discovered by Spaniard Ponce de
Leon in 1513, became St. Augustine. Of course, by the time I discovered
it, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) was good enough to
put out signs. (Had FDOT been around 500 years before, de Leon's
discovery would have been less impressive by far.)
Fortunately, I'm not in need of the service
-- since it's 5:01pm, and they closed at 5pm sharp.
I must commend them on the use of old-style
architecture. You'd think this was historically important.
(It's not -- it's the newspaper's offices.)
