Perhaps 2,000 people, and the closest bona fide city to Death Valley's floor. Once a thriving railroad gateway for nearby Rhyolite, it now serves as a quaint stop-over for those passing to and from Death Valley, or for those who'd prefer to camp a bit outside of the extreme temperatures that Death Valley is known to possess.

Burros reportedly live wild in and around Beatty, apparently. During the gold rush era in the 1800s, prospectors came to the area with their stuff on the backs of burros (usually one burro to a miner). Realizing that the gold fields of California were far away, they hiked over the mountains, leaving their burros behind. Despite efforts to relocate them, there are numerous burros wandering about. Apparently -- but we didn't see a single one, just the sign.

As with all visits, we start at the sign -- which took the safe path of not claiming a specific population. The main street through town. Not too busy; we saw the same cop 3 times, on 3 different streets. To learn more about Beatty, or the burro, why not pop into the town's museum? I'd recommend it.
Shock and surprise - burrow warning sign. These guys graze by the road without worry. Cute, but what's your scientific proof for such a claim? Question withdrawn; I'm sure the church's neighbor can back up their claim of non-burning.
