Perhaps 2,000 people, and the closest bona fide city to Death Valley's floor. Once a thriving railroad gateway for nearby Rhyolite, it now serves as a quaint stop-over for those passing to and from Death Valley, or for those who'd prefer to camp a bit outside of the extreme temperatures that Death Valley is known to possess. Burros reportedly live wild in and around Beatty, apparently. During the gold rush era in the 1800s, prospectors came to the area with their stuff on the backs of burros (usually one burro to a miner). Realizing that the gold fields of California were far away, they hiked over the mountains, leaving their burros behind. Despite efforts to relocate them, there are numerous burros wandering about. Apparently -- but we didn't see a single one, just the sign.
