Mission San Luis Rey de Francia Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

Mission San Luis Rey was founded June 13, 1798 - known as the King of the Missions to some - and the current church is the third built at this site, back in 1815. In 1830, the mission was claimed to be the largest building in California at the time Father Antonio Peyri looked after the mission from its founding right through his departure in January 1832. At its peak, San Luis Rey covered nearly 950,400 acres of land (about 1,485 square miles or 3,846 square kilometers).

As was the others, Mission San Luis de Francia was secularized in 1834 and the land sold into private ownership. During the United States' war with Mexico, the site was used as a military outpust, and two Mexican priests were given permission to again hold religious services at the site in the early 1890s. Restoration began about that same time, and continued until about 1912 under Father Jeremiah O'Keefe, though work in various areas - including new discoveries - continued into the 1960s, and other changes since (like seismic retrofits in the early 1980s).
