Given the whole movie thing, I figured a visit to Cape Fear, North Carolina
would be everything as suspenseful. What I didn't account for is
the totalitarian nature of local law enforcement officials in what turned
out to be a path from big city Wilmington to Cape Fear, passing through
a series of small hamlets were 25 MPH is not only a good idea, it's the
law, enforced by marked and unmarked cars, using radar and other detection
methods. Sneaky devils.
And to top it all off, the Cape*
itself isn't accessible. Dang. Can't really even see it,
huh.
But, it wouldn't be the South without one
(or three) historic markers to note... something.
The marker for historic (meaning, totally
destroyed) Fort Fisher.
* By
definition, a "cape" is a point of land projecting into
a body of water. In order to 'project', don't you have to be
connected to the rest of the land? I'm sure it is somewhere,
but I couldn't find it.
Despite everything that took place between
then and now, the world still needs its heros.
