Originally founded in 1886 under the name Frazier, this little hamlet
has some rather pleasant weather and lots of open spaces. It's also parked
next to a reasonably good sized lake, Lake Altus, covering 6,800 acres
and providing all the usual water-related recreational activities. (Except
ice skating, I'd bet.)
The sign was paid for by the Officers' Wives in 1976. I don't know
why it's not more colorful...
The Altus AFB opened in 1943, and today is the home of the C-5 Galaxy,
the world's biggest plane.
Even the downtown park can't seem to shed the presence of the base.
Nice rocket, though, eh?
With the base opening during the war, I'd guess lots of homes were
built quickly, and got worn down.
I'm guessing it was an auto-wrecking yard, but it was hard to tell.
It was cool looking, though.
If I were to get a place to fix up, I'd buy a railroad depot, just
like that dude inherited in Station
Agent.
