Contrary to how it looked on the map, this waterfalls-bearing state park
was relatively close to Hilo (just a few minutes drive north of town),
and just a blink outside of teeny-tiny Honomu.
Oh, and despite how it may be described in brochures, it's a 20 minute
hike, tops -- just oodles of stairs.
In the beginning, as always, the journey begins with a single sign
along the way...
On the approach to the falls, the place is nothing if not tropical;
the path sneaks between the bamboo.
Below, a teeny tiny stream is trickling through the trees and bamboo.
One of the distant waterfalls is Kahona Falls, on the
way to Akaka Falls down the trail a bit.
The Akaka Falls are worth the not at all long hike
to get to see them; lots of stairs, but not that far.
Across the parking lot was a nice view of the Pacific Ocean with
the sun peeking through the clouds.
