The memorial serves as the resting place for 434 service people who died
in 1942 and 1943 in the Darwin area, beginning with 240 killed during
the first Japanese air raid on Darwin and its naval base on 19 February
1942. This site is also the Northern Territory War Memorial to remember
the 287 personnel who died in the region in land, air, and sea battles
(including some unknown soldiers).
