The memorial serves as the resting place for 434 service people who died in 1942 and 1943 in the Darwin area, beginning with 240 killed during the first Japanese air raid on Darwin and its naval base on 19 February 1942. This site is also the Northern Territory War Memorial to remember the 287 personnel who died in the region in land, air, and sea battles (including some unknown soldiers).

The war memorial entrance; the grounds are extremely well-kept, something to admire in itself. The military area of the cemetery and its markers for soldiers killed in the area. The war memorial commemorating those who died in the area (who may be interred elsewhere).

The civilian section of the cemetery isn't much different, although it is much smaller. The graves of the nine postal workers who were killed in the the 19 February 1942 air raid.
