Katherine was quite under water during the flood in 1998, where entire
buildings had their roof line become islands, if they were lucky, and
the roofs submerged otherwise. Downtown, the river left 3 meters (10 feet)
of standing water on the streets, and more in the lower areas of this
city of almost 8,000 people. But today was a sunny, dry day, and a Thursday,
which (along with Tuesday) is Aboriginal pension check day, according
to bus-driver Wayne, who also didn't stop and let me get out and take
pictures. Drat. So, apologies, but that's why this is all we've got.
Katherine Hotel was all under water, except the roof's tippy-top.
Allegedly on the way to, or from, cashing those pension checks.
Target does indeed have a global present. Big whoop, huh.
No, nothing particularly extraordinary about them...
just whatever we could see whilst stuck in the bus.
