Originally opened in 1902 and an instant success amongst locals, and
the popularity just soaring from there, the Wellington Cable Car has been
retrofitted a few times to use steam, then electricity in 1933, and then
being rebuilt in 1978 to replace the Swiss-built system with that in use
today.
After some wandering about, we found the cable car entrance. Not
the best-marked place, mind you.
Once inside, you wait on the platform, which isn't quite this blurry
in real life. Honest.
From the top, you have a pretty nifty view of the place, as well
as the cable car going away again.
If you go back to the 1899-1902 construction, you can see how the
four tunnels were built.
And if you're an engineering student, or like stuff moving, you
can see the mechanics of it all.
The visit completed, this is what you see on the way back down the
hillside back to city centre.
