A 14th century, family-owned castle until being grabbed by the King in
the 16th century, tearing down most of it and rebuilding a fortified castle
in its place. It operated as a prison for a time in the 18th century,
and today houses Sweden's National Collection of Portraits, the oldest
portrait collection in the world.
These were Russian cannons that were captured (in 1581 and 1621)
during wartime and brought here.
