Maybe 50,000 years ago (like anyone was keeping track, eh?), a 40,000
ton meteor made of iron-nickel slammed into the Arizona desert.
(Is it just me that's noticing all the cool stuff to see in Arizona is
prehistoric?) So, we went and went to look at the big ol' hole in
the ground. And the nice person at the window of this privately-owned
natural attraction lightened the boy of $12 for the opportunity to look
at it. (More gorging to view an earthen gouge.)
Between this picture and the next, you
get some idea of the size of this big ol' hole...
... it's 550 feet from top to bottom, 2.4
miles around, and almost 3/4 of a mile across.
Another view, looking down at the venture
into mining the crater from the 1920s (not successful).
And another...
... and another...
You're not allowed in the crater, so there's
a cheesy backdrop to fake being there. So, I did.
NASA did some of their space dude training
here, so they have a cool Apollo module outside.
