The rock is actually sandstone (one of the softer types of rock), and with friction cracks (which generally occur at right-angles) and flowing water, the gorge has been carved over time. In places, the water is up to 100 feet deep, and the cliffs towering more than 180 feet above the water line (seen in the first picture in the bottom row).
