In 1863, there was something of a big deal of a huge battle between the
Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War. The three-day battle
stood as a huge victory for the Union Army, and turned away the Confederate's
attempts to invade Pennsylvania. It stands out as the bloodiest single
battle of the war, resulting in over 51,000 soldiers killed, wounded,
captured or missing. (It was also here Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg
Address during the dedication of the cemetery, on November 19, 1863.)
Yes, it does look dark. Sunset was pretty much a memory at this
point.
A monument to the 3rd NY Independent Battery Artillery Brigade alongside
the cemetery.
At one time Gettysburg was the largest military cemetery, but Arlington
took the lead long ago.
